4 Simple Tips to Make Back-to-School Mealtimes Easier
1. Choose the Dinner Direction Earlier
Try not to wait until everyone is hungry to start deciding what dinner will be.
You do not need to plan every detail. Just choose the general direction earlier in the day—or the night before while you are already making dinner.
Your dinner direction could be as simple as:
- Chicken tomorrow night
- Use the ground beef in the refrigerator
- Leftovers need to be eaten
- No-oven dinner
- Breakfast for dinner
- Quesadillas or wraps
Deciding the direction ahead of time removes one decision when you are already tired and everyone is asking, “What’s for dinner?”
Melanie’s Mealtime Tip
While you are making tonight’s dinner, take a quick look at what you have for tomorrow. Move something to the refrigerator to thaw, set out a pantry ingredient, or write your dinner idea somewhere you will see it.
2. Repeat Lunches You Know They Will Eat
Lunches do not have to be completely different every day.
Find two or three lunch combinations that your kids—or the adults in your household—reliably eat and rotate them throughout the week.
You can keep the main item the same and change the fruit, crunchy side, yogurt, cheese, or small treat.
A lunch someone actually eats is more useful than a picture-perfect lunch that comes home untouched.
Familiar options could include:
- Turkey and cheese roll-ups
- PB&J pinwheels
- Cheese, crackers, and deli meat
- A mini bagel lunch
- An adult snack box
- Dinner leftovers
Repeating reliable lunches can also make grocery shopping and morning packing much easier.
Extra Time-Saving Tip
While you are already in the kitchen making dinner, prepare lunches for the next day. The ingredients and containers are already out, and getting it done at night can make the morning feel a whole lot less rushed.
3. Keep a Grab-and-Go Snack Area
After-school hunger can happen the minute everyone walks through the door—and once the hangry feelings start taking over, making dinner can feel a whole lot harder.
Create one snack area in the pantry and another in the refrigerator using foods your household already enjoys.
Your pantry area might include crackers, pretzels, popcorn, granola bars, applesauce pouches, fruit snacks, or mini muffins.
Your refrigerator area could include cheese sticks, yogurt, washed fruit, deli meat, mini bagels, or leftover quesadillas.
This makes it easier for everyone to see what is available without searching through the entire kitchen.
You can still offer fruit or vegetables alongside their favorite snacks without expecting every snack to look like a miniature meal.
4. Keep a Couple of Backup Dinners Ready
Even the best dinner plan can fall apart.
An activity runs late. The meat you thought you took out is somehow still magically in the freezer.. The planned leftovers disappear. Or you simply do not have the energy to make what you originally planned.
Keep ingredients for two or three easy backup dinners in your pantry or freezer.
Your backup dinners might include:
- Pasta and sauce
- Bean and cheese quesadillas
- Breakfast for dinner
- English muffin or mini bagel pizzas
- Snack plate with cheese, crackers, deli meat, fruit, and anything else you already have
The goal is not to create a huge stockpile. It is to have a few dependable options that can become dinner without another trip to the store or a last-minute drive-thru run.
